Thoughts on SCOTUS
The past several weeks have seen one of the worst SCOTUS terms in the history of the United States of America. It's not even close, it was awful. To recap, if someone is not mirandized as is their legal right, they have no recourse to sue the police. Not only is it now acceptable for public school employees to pressure students to join in prayer during school events, but states are now required to subsidize religious schools if they have a tuition voucher program. In the wake of a mass shooting that was done by a white supremacist psycho in Buffalo, and another in Uvalde where 19 children and several adults were gunned to death in an elementary school, now states cannot create their own concealed carry regulations, making this country a lot more dangerous. The EPA just lost its ability to regulate emissions on power plants, delivering a gigantic blow to our ability to stop climate change. If an American goes on a native American reserve and commits a crime against a native, the reservation no longer has the right to prosecute that American. And of course, overturning Roe v Wade, stripping women of control over their own bodies by allowing states to force them to carry all pregnancies to term no matter what under the threat of jail time. And it doesn't end there, the conservative activist judges have already states that gay rights and access to contraceptives are also on the chopping block. Voting rights, affirmative action, labor rights, indigenous rights, and so much more will likely wither away within the next several years thanks to this court.
How did we get here? Well in 2016 the democratic party put out the mathematically worst possible candidate they could have possibly put out to run against Donald Trump. They were arrogant and thought they would destroy Trump. Well, they didn't. Because of the Democrats political malpractice, the Republicans were able to jam 3 new federalist society activist justices despite not winning the popular vote in the general election. And since Biden took office, and the democrats took both the house of representatives and the senate, they have done absolutely nothing to protect these rights through legislation. Whatever excuse of the democrats you choose to believe, ultimately this outcome is a result of democratic weakness. They have no interest in protecting human rights, as they can use a fake support of them to get campaign donations.
So how does this get fixed? What happens now? Well there are things the democrats must do right fucking now. This is getting rid of the filibuster to codify abortion rights on a federal level. The Biden administration must build abortion clinics on federal land, repeal the Hyde act, and use other federal agencies to ensure abortion access is available for all no matter what state they live in. These are things our politicians can do tomorrow, not after getting more votes or $15 campaign donations, tomorrow. They refuse to do it because they are feckless cowards. The population must light the fire underneath these losers' asses to get them to act. Organize in your workplaces, your communities, donate to abortion funds, make your voice heard. Do not let the democrats get away with allowing the conservatives to strip us of our rights.
